More action set for Charnwood

In a recent announcement by Little Athletics ACT (LAACT), Charnwood Oval will host the 2015 Multi Event Carnival, the 40th Anniversary of Ginninderra Tigers and the 2016 Northside Regional Championships.

The decision is a first for the Ginninderra Tigers who will host the Multi Event Carnival following the event being located at Chapman Oval for the past two seasons. The Carnival is also returning to its traditional Sunday (8th November 2015) timetable as in recent years it has been trialled on a Saturday, which has seen the event attract more athletes than ever before. Ginninderra is the reigning Carnival Champions in the Multi Event making hosting the one day event even more special for the Belconnen based athletics club.

Hot on the heels of the Multi Event Carnival is Ginninderra's very own 40th Anniversary Club Carnival. The Tigers were established in 1976 and this season sees the club celebrating 40 years of athletics in Belconnen. The Club Carnival is open to athletes from anywhere in the ACT and will be held on Saturday 28th November 2015. The Preliminary Program includes up to 7 events for  Age Groups ensuring "something for everybody" on this very special day of celebrations.

In a switch this Season the LAACT Relay Carnival is now being held on the 13th of December (Sunday) and is being held at Woden Park.  The new synthetic track in the south of Canberra is set to hold the LAACT State Championships (March) and the Southside Regional Championships (February).

This season Australia's fastest athletics track won't host an LAACT Carnival, giving Charnwood Oval the opportunity to provide the best athletics experience in the north of the Territory.

The third big event for 2015-16 to be held at the home of the Tigers is the Northside Regional Championships (27-28th February 2016). Athletes from Gungahlin, Yass, Goulburn, Queanbeyan, Belconnen and Dickson will descend on Charnwood for this big two day event for Ages U8 to U17. Regionals is the pre-qualifying event for inclusion in the season ending State Championships at Woden Park.

The official athletics season gets underway on 10th of October 2015 at Charnwood Oval and everyone is invited to come along and give it a try.  For anyone interested in a pre-season road trip to Sydney (25-26th September 2015) with the Tigers keep an eye on Facebook for details.

Belconnen Athlete joins Wallaroos

Congratulations to Fee Knights a Ginninderra Athletics Club Favourite, the Tiger Jumps Coach, Junior Coach Mentor and five-time Club Record Holder in the Under 20s, who today was selected in the Wallaroos extended squad for a high performance training camp to be held on the Gold Coast.

Fee along with her fellow ACT team mates put in exceptional performances at the recent National Womens XV Championships where the ACT finished runners up to Sydney.

Ginninderra Athletics claim Race 4 of RunACT

Belconnen's own Ginninderra Tigers  have won both the Junior and Senior events at the Weetangera RunACT Cross Country Relay.

The Tigers supported the event by entering a total of 8 teams including three in the Senior competition. A total of 32 athletes from Ginninderra participated and there was a sea of Yellow on the hills of Weetangera as a result.

Ginninderra has entered every RunACT event this season which has only been matched by South Canberra Tuggeranong. The next race in the series is on Saturday 26 July – Dunrossil Drive hosted by the YCRC.

RunACT Winter Series comes to Weetangara

The RunACT Winter Series Race 4 - Weetangara Relays is being held on Sunday 5 July. Following the ACT Cross Country Championships and two successful handicap races, the RunACT Series is going to change things up.

The next race on on Sunday 5 July is a relay around a specially constructed spectator 1km loop next to Weetangara Primary School - Southwell St, Weetangara.

There will be two races

  1. a 4 x 1 km relay for Under 12s which will begin at 2pm for teams of 4 with each running 1km.
  2. The Open relay will begin at 2.30pm and rules are as follows:
  • Teams of 3 or 4
  • Each team member must run a minimum of 2 laps (2km) and a maximum of 4 laps (4km)
  • Teams can choose how they manage the laps and team members: they could have a changeover every lap and the team members running 1km at a time - or each runner could run their entire distance in one go. Or any variation they want
  • Changeovers are only allowed at the end of laps
  • Teams will be welcome to change tactics as the race unfolds

This will be a fun event with plenty of strategy and a course that is set up so that spectators can see most of the race.

For those who are interested in the pointscores, each member of the teams will get the same points, and club pointscores will be based on the individual scores. Members of the winning team will get 40 points, second place will get 38 points etc, with a floor of 20 points per competitor.

Individuals can register for the event online or on the day. The relay teams can be organised and registered on the day. Online entries will open Monday 29th June.
