Another record falls to Vergano

Rowan Vergano celebrated his club's 35th anniversary in style on Sunday, launching 1.82m off the ground in the high jump to smash his own under-16s record.

The versatile Ginninderra athlete beat his previous benchmark by 7cm, adding to an impressive stash of records already in his collection.

In recent years Vergano has rewritten the under-16 boys record books, also claiming the top marks in the long jump, triple jump, shotput and javelin as his own.

A late bloomer on the athletics field, Vergano said a teenage growth spurt had contributed to his success.

"I was one of the shortest in school and then l started Year 8, started to grow and now I'm one of the tallest in my year," Vergano said. "Only the last two years I've really started breaking records, I've gotten a lot bigger and started actually training for the events, which has started letting me break records."

Vergano's triple jump record now stands at 12.55m, and his long jump benchmark at 5.9m, 16cm shy of his personal best.

He's also been dominating the throwing events- his javelin mark reads 39.69m and shotput is at 9.9m.

But it's the high jump he likes the most.

"I've been doing [high jump] for about four years. I started jumping
about 1.20m, I ended up going to see a coach John Hunt, he trained me for the last couple of years," Vergano said.

"Now I'm jumping 1.85m, l've been to nationals in Sydney for it. I'm almost jumping my height, which is really amazing.

"It's one of the sports I really love.

The 16-year-old was one of about 150 children from around Canberra in action at Charnwood Oval last weekend to celebrate the
club's 35th year in existence.

It was the first time in 10 years Ginninderra had held its own territory-wide carnival.
