Sun Smart Tigers all set for season start

The athletes of Ginninderra Athletics will be cooling off between jumps and throws this coming season thanks to the awarding of a Capital Assistance Program Grant from the ACT Government.

The Tigers are investing $22,000 into Facilities Renewal at Charnwood Athletics Field which includes the construction of two 8.8m and 3m Sun Shelters.

The new Shade Structures will be located at either end of the Oval with the first positioned between the Long Jump Pits and the Discus Cages and the second near the Shot Put Circles at the Northern end of the Oval.

The Grant is a continued investment by Ginninderra Athletics and the ACT Government which has seen over $500,000 committed to the Charnwood District Playing Fields in recent years. The support the club receives from its generous Sponsors allows the Tigers to co-fund initiatives such as the Facilities Renewal with the ACT Government.

Tigers find new way to keep cool

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry, has announced that more than $2.7 million will be invested in local sport and recreation as part of the 2017 Sport and Recreation Grants Program and Asset Repair and Maintenance Scheme.

78 applications from 70 organisations will share in more than $2.7m in funding to support the local sport and recreation industry’s continuing endeavours to provide the community with quality, diverse and safe physical activity experiences and places to play.

Ginninderra Athletics received $11,000 as part of the latest Grants Announcement. From the beginning of next season, all athletes and their families will enjoy new shade areas at Charnwood Oval.

Inviting the Fire Brigade will always be a Tiger favourite way to stay cool, but the new shade areas will provide summer long protection every weekend at the track.

The grant will also go towards repairing OH&S issues with the discus cage giving the Tigers the safest start to the new season.

The grant is a 50/50 investment jointly funded with the ACT Government and Ginninderra Athletics' very generous sponsors. The total investment is $22,000. This is the greatest investment at Charnwood since November 2014 when the club had just ticked over $100,000 in investment in the previous five years.

Family Fun and Fitness

Over the Winter months the Ginninderra Athletics Committee have been planning some many new and exciting initiatives especially for Tiny Tots, Tiger Cubs (Under 6s) and our Under 7 and 8s Boys and Girls.

Focus of Little Athletics is on Family Fun and Fitness. The Tigers are delivering an improved Weekly Program this season that keeps kids active for longer but that doesn't impact on your Saturday morning too much.

The Club House Days and the inclusion of team based Relay events gives athletes the chance to socialise and make close friends. The introduction of Team Managers of 8-10 athletes will also ensure small groups of kids are doing more of what they want.

The oval is being re-arranged from previous seasons with Tiny Tots now located at the southern end of the Oval in a bigger space and closer to the other Tigers and the Toilet facilities. We are also trialling moving the Canteen to the Southern Shed too.

Ginninderra has purchased more Shot Puts and Discus for the younger age groups. We will paint each Saturday pop-up throwing circles too give Teams the chance to do the event at their leisure without having to wait in line for a Discus Cage or a throwing Circle. Less kids and more circles means more kids throwing.

Similarly with Long Jump Pits there will be mats at both ends of the Pit so athletes can jump from either side. Giving Teams the opportunity to just get in there and do it. No fuss and no hassle.

We are also encouraging Teams in the younger age groups to focus less on Centimetres in their throws and jumps, instead clearing or achieving a line of personal accomplishment each time they participate. This is not the Olympics and we are here for their enjoyment.

For our older youngsters, the Under 8s, they will enjoy two new events the 700m run and the Scissors Jump (High Jump).

Our Teams will again be supported by the Junior Coaches who will help guide the kids in the basics of each event.

For Parents unsure on how to assist at an event like raking, measuring, spiking or spotting jumps and throws, we have developed some quick and easy guides with illustrations on how to help. Most activities take 15-20 minutes and only happen twice each Saturday. So while you are at the oval encouraging your child there's an easy way to really get in on the action and make the day go smoother for everyone.

Canteen relocation trial

From the start of the season the Club's Canteen is going to be trialled from a new location at the Southern End of the Oval from the Shed nearest the Discus Cages.

The Committee respects the tradition, culture and familiarity of where the Canteen has been located for almost 40 years. So making change is never easy especially where for many years the Club has been doing something like the Canteen the same way.

There are many benefits that the Club will enjoy though and it is a worthwhile trial. These include:

  1. Located only a short distance from where most of our members are (race start/finishes, Discus, Long and Triple Jump, Tiny Tots);
  2. Better view for Volunteers working in the Canteen;
  3. Overview of the Public Amenities building for athlete safety;
  4. Co-located with our new Coffee Van the Shotclock Espresso;
  5. Nearest the bigger Carpark;
  6. Access to running water; and
  7. The Barbecue Helpers are in a wind protected area;

The Committee will trial the new location for the first 5 weeks of the season and subject to member feedback decide if the Canteen location stays or goes back to the Northern end of the Oval.
