Ginninderra Cross Country

This Winter prepare for cross country with your running and walking club Ginninderra Athletics. Go off track at The Pinnacle, run hills at Mount Rogers or take it easy around the Charnwood Sporting fields. There are distances, courses and surfaces for everybody, regardless of experience, fitness or age.

Ginninderra Athletics first Winter Cross Country run/walk is this Wednesday 2nd May starting from our Home Ground at Charnwood Oval on Lhotsky Street starting at 4:45pm (arrive early to warm up). Take the 1km , 2km or 5km challenge for yourself and bring a friend. There is no cost to participate but you must be a registered member of Ginninderra Athletics first for insurance purposes.

If competitive running is more your liking, join the Tigers and compete at the Run_ACT Junior Cross Country Series which started last Saturday at Lake Burley Griffin. The next race is at Lake Ginninderra. Competing for Ginninderra gives the Tigers the chance to claim the LAACT Cross Country trophy. Run_ACT accepts registered athletes from under 6 and up.

Programs for 2018 Winter Season:

  1. Tiny Tigers (Tiny Tots) program for 3 to 4 year olds facilitated by Debra Evans;
  2. Tiger Cubs program for 5 to 8 year olds coordinated by Fiona Jarvis; and
  3. Winter Track & Field program for 9 years to Masters athletes coached by Steve Dodt;
  4. Cross Country for 6 years to Master athletes coached by Brian Daly;  and
  5. Junior Coach Mentoring program for 13 to 18 year olds mentored by Luke Allard.

Tiny Tots: A must for all enthusiastic three to four year olds at Ginninderra, the Tiny Tigers (Tiny Tots) are prefect for parents looking to share in some fitness and fun with their little ones.   Tiny Tots utilises children’s innate desire to play in a positive, fun learning environment.

Tiny Tots activities are based around athletics running, jumping and throwing events and are designed to help children develop fundamental movement skills (FMS). FMS act as precursors to more specialised, challenging and complex movement skills.

Mastering FMS assists children to be physically active, which helps with their general health and wellbeing, promotes social interactions and emotional attributes and thus assists in the development of speech, self-esteem, confidence and independence.

Each week Tiny Tots are engaged with colour, activities, learning, movement and fun. Parents are actively encouraged to join in and share the bond, connection and joy of participating actively with their children.   The laugher, happiness, development and frienships being made is always heartwarming, beautiful and special.

  • Saturday 9am – 10am – Commencing 5th May (10 week season)

Tiger Cubs: Ginninderra will teach kids the skills of athletics before we ask them to perform these skills in a competitive environment. Tiger Cubs is a coaching program. It is based on a massive amount of research that has been done on how children learn sporting skills, what children want out of their early sporting experiences and the learning capacities of children at different ages.

All children from 5 to 8 years are invited to enjoy learning athletics skills in a fun, engaging, non competitive, family friendly way. Tiger Cubs is skill develop based and lead by a Tiger Cubs coordinator and qualified Junior Coaches.

Parents are encouraged to come along, be part of Tiger Cubs and enjoy the joy of participating with their children. All children will be successful, develop, learn, and be actively engaged at Tiger Clubs.   All athletic events are coached and the activities keep kids on the go the whole time.

You will be provided with support, guidance and training and learn important life skills that will help with your development and future school and employment options.  Junior Coaching is also a great way to further develop your own athletics, communication, and organisational skills, give back, feel a sense of accomplishment, make a difference to our Tiny Tot and Tiger Cub athletes, make friends and learn from an incredible and experienced senior coach and athlete.
