2018 Athletics ACT Annual Awards

On Saturday night a number of Ginninderra Athletics big names received awards from Athletics ACT for outstanding performances across 2017-18.

The Tigers are ecstatic to see one of our hardest working coaches receive the Athletics ACT 2017-2018 Daryl Cross Coach of the Year, Hamish MacDonald. An outstanding recognition for the six time Paralympic seated shot putter who these days oversees the development of two of the club's elite para throwers in Cameron Crombie and Kathryn Ross.

Cameron who has had the best of seasons was recognised twice for Athletics ACT 2017-2018 Male Senior Athlete of the Season and the Athletics ACT 2017-2018 Mick Dowling Para Athlete of the Year. Cameron who recently won a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast will have to make more room alongside his World Championship Gold and World Record for this season.

2017/2018 saw 28 ACT members represent Australia at international levels, received a medal from an international competition and/or ACT, National or World Record with these athletes all receiving a coveted Laurel Wreath for the 2018/2019 season. Among the recipients were Australian 400m Hurdles bronze medalist Matt Walters, Australian representative Mitch Baker who claimed a bronze medal in the U20 Men 10km Walk at World Race Walking Teams Championships earlier this month, UC Students Vanessa Low (two time Paralympian) and World Paralympic Gold medalist Scott Reardon, and Cameron Crombie.

Congratulations to everyone recognised by the Territory Association at the Gala Dinner and Awards Night.

Myth Buster – How long does Little Aths take?

Way back when Little Aths would run for 2-3 hours easily. This was before Ginninderra Athletics made use of electronic timing gates (there are no time keepers anymore) or the splitting of age group start times (so less waiting around).

The Tigers also makes the best use of our facilities and schedule Age Groups in a particular event order to maximize time. For example we have three discus cages, five shot put circles, four jumping pits, four high jump mats, two straight tracks, etc. We invest in our facilities regularly to make the program quicker and better for athletes.

This season we have introduced small sided teams (like basketball) where there are only 8-10 athletes in a team. This helps the team move more quickly around the oval.

Start Times vary:

  • Tiny Tots - Under 8s: 08:30am
  • Under 9s: 09:30am (warm-up 09:15am)
  • Under 10 - Open Age: 10:00am (warm up 09:45am)

Age groups typically do 5-6 events every weekend. These will take 15-20 minutes each. Finishing at around 09:40am for the youngest athletes, 11:00am for Under 9s and 11:30am for the older athletes.

It is not mandatory for athletes to do every event. Their team will get maximum points though if they do participate in every event though.

The innovative approach by the Tigers when it comes to the running the weekly program is supported by Team Managers who ensure that athletes follow the designated program. Deviation can cause havoc to other teams.

Sydney Road Trip 2016

Ginninderra Athletics is again off to Sydney for our annual pre-season Road Trip. September is traditionally a quiet time off from active sport and the trip plays an important team bonding trip as well as a great weekend to visit the big smoke during school holidays.

The Club has organised the following competitions for our athletes.

The trip isn’t all about athletics and the trip to the Beach and the City for dinner is always a highlight. There’s also the chance to go shopping… for athletics gear!

Check out the photos from last year and read about the events that were on offer.

If you wish to attend the trip you must be registered with Ginninderra Little Athletics Club for the Little Aths Meets and Dual Registered (its free) with UC Ginninderra Athletics for the competition at SOPAC.

Please register your Expression of Interest to let us know if you intend going or if you'd like more information.

Club Records Review

Ginninderra recognises the performances of all athletes and congratulates those who have achieved their best. Undertaking reviews from time to time are necessary to ensure confidence that the best performances are published as official club records.

The 2016-17 Committee of the Ginninderra Little Athletics Centre have identified a number of Club All Time Track Records that have been identified as requiring review.

These records stand out for the following reasons:

  • Records were physically impossible;
  • Faster than NSW equivalent Record;
  • Faster than ACT equivalent Record;
  • Athlete was not a member of GLAC at the time; OR
  • Inconsistency between reported (verified) and published records.

The Committee wishes to offer current and past members the opportunity to submit verifiable records in the following events for possible ratification as the new Club Record. These records will be published in the Season Booklet available from the beginning of September 2016.

Age Records under review are:

  • U6G 70m
  • U6B 70m
  • U7B 100m
  • U8G 70m
  • U8G 100m
  • U8B 200m
  • U9G 70m
  • U9B 60mH
  • U10G 100m
  • U10B 60mH
  • U11B 100m
  • U12B 100m
  • U12B 800m
  • U12B 60mH
  • U13G 100m
  • U13B 100m
  • U13B 800m
  • U14B 800m

All Club Records are always subject to review and not just those above. Any current and past member who believes they have a verifiable performance that is better than the current published record is encouraged to submit that performance for consideration. All Club Records are assessed based on the Policy and Guidelines set by the Committee.

The Records Officer maintains a Registry of Records and all Club Records (past and present) are published there.

For further information please speak with the Records Officer or anyone on the Committee.
