Come & Try is a Wash Out

News received today from the ACT Government is that they recommend canceling any non-critical event scheduled for Sports Grounds on the 8th of October:

  • "Continuing above average rain events has hampered the ability to safely remove goal posts associated with the winter codes from ACT Government Sportsgrounds. At this point in time a number sportsgrounds may not be fit for summer sports until sportsgrounds have dried sufficiently and the posts can be safely removed;
  • Continuing above average rain events has hampered the ability to mow ACT Government Sportsgrounds. At this point in time a number sportsgrounds may not be fit for summer sports until sportsgrounds have dried sufficiently to allow mowers onto the playing surface.
  • Active Canberra have prioritised goal post removal and mowing events where possible".

Ginninderra Athletics has reluctantly decided to cancel the Come & Try Day and hold it the week after on the 15th of October from 08:30am.

However there will be a Registration Desk running from the Oval starting at 9am until 11am. Registrations can also be done online.

There will also be a Team Manager briefing session from 09:30am as well. All Team Managers (new or returning) are encouraged to attend to hear about the new season.

Ginninderra’s got the eye of the tiger

Taking inspiration from Katy Perry's Roar, last weekend Ginninderra showed that they've got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the rain!

A small committed and passionate team of 61 athletes from the Ginninderra Little Athletics Club endured the rain and the cold to take out the Little Athletics ACT Relay Carnival at the AIS.

Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar

Girls and Boys aged from U7 to U17 wore their tiger stripes with pride as they raced proudly together in teams against athletes from all over Canberra and southern NSW.

Ginninderra's team tally of 703.50 points is just short of last year's effort of 728 points where the Tigers finished second overall.

In what's been a golden period for the Tigers over the last 4 seasons where Ginninderra have now finished the LAACT Relay Carnival in first twice (2013 and 2010) and second in 2012 - the 2011 Carnival was a wash out.

The 2013 Carnival was a tight affair with the Tigers trailing Relay specialists Calwell (7 time champions) and southern heavy weights Woden at the half way point. In the later half of the carnival Ginninderra pinned their ears back and launched a massive challenge to run over the top of their rivals.

Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

The win places Ginninderra now on equal fourth place overall on championship wins. A truly magnificent achievement by everyone involved.

The U16G Medley Relay also did exceptionally well by breaking the State Record for the event in a convincing win!

Thank you to the athletes, parents and officials who all participated for the Tigers and showed so much spirit... easily recognised as having the loudest and longest cheers for their team mates!

You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground

Wet Weather? What’s happening?

Forecast for Saturday... Cloudy. Isolated showers. Winds southeasterly 15 to 20 km/h becoming light in the evening. Chance of any rain: 70%. Rainfall amount: 1 to 5 mm

Except in cases of extremely bad weather, a modified program is usually run for those who attend.

Charnwood Oval has extremely good water absorption, drainage and run off - it is extremely unlikely the Saturday Meet will be cancelled.

To confirm whether competition is on, the shed may be rung after 8.30am (Saturdays) on 6259 9085 or following our Twitter Feed or on Facebook. The website will also be updated.

In the event of Cancellation, the Saturday morning competition will be held on the Tuesday afternoon in lieu of training.

Note: the AIS Track is an all weather facility and any event held at the AIS on a wet day will run regardless of the conditions.
