Towering 700m high to the south of Lake Ginninderra, Mount Painter Nature Reserve, part of Canberra Nature Park, is a 93 hectare reserve in West Belconnen (in the suburb of Cook). The reserve protects a small area of endangered Yellow Box-Blakely’s Red Gum Grassy Woodland, which provides habitat for woodland birds. Several plants that are rare in the ACT are found in the reserve.
A bush walk up to the summit provides unhindered views of Canberra and the Brindabellas from Mount Painter. Views of Lake Ginninderra in the distance clearly show the skyline and the Western Foreshore from the summit.
Walking to the summit is along a sealed trail that includes two lookouts of the wonderful 360 degree views, which include Lake Ginninderra, Black Mountain, Telstra Tower, Lake Burley Griffin, the Brindabellas and Belconnen.
